Milwaukee City Hall Quilt

"Milwaukee City Hall Quilt"
2011 ~ Linda Johnson

Hand-dyed cotton fabric
24” wide by 31.5” tall

On exhibit through March 4, 2012 at the Overture Center, 201 State Street, Madison, Wisconsin ~ Gallery II

Raised in Milwaukee, I think City Hall is one of my favorite buildings of all time.  Inside and out, the architecture is so striking.  I created this quilt in conjunction with the Forward Theater Company premier of Gwen Rice's play “A Thousand Words” because I wanted to evoke a black and white photograph that could have been taken during the depression.  Also, Milwaukee had a very vibrant WPA handicraft program in the 1930’s and ‘40’s, focusing on making textiles and dolls for children.  The Milwaukee WPA program also created one of the first multi-cultural work situations for women in a city that sadly still struggles with segregation.  In the foreground is the Pabst Theater, a nod to my theater days in Milwaukee in the 1980’s.
