About

Linda J. Johnson comes from generations of textile artists.  Her mother, Joanne Neusen, is an award-winning weaver in their home town of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.   Linda’s grandmother painted watercolors, and made beautiful needle- and crochet- works. Linda's great-grandmother crocheted, among many other things, two tour-de-force banquet-sized lace table cloths.

Paying the bills:  Linda handles administrative aspects of research grants in every possible discipline for UW-Madison's College of Letters & Science.  Linda holds a B.A. from UW-Milwaukee in mass communications, with a minor in English.  Her Ph.D. from UW-Madison is in textile design and chemistry, with a minor in statistics.  Linda was a co-founder of a Milwaukee theater company in the 1980’s; she is learning modern Greek; she designs databases for fun.  All these varied interests serve her well – daily conversations at her job can range from archaeological excavations at Troy, to the musings of Thomas Jefferson, to the atomic particle collider projects in Switzerland, to studies on the effects of American public policies on the working poor.

Paying it forward:  Along with her passion for fiber art, Linda volunteers her computing expertise to her artist guild and neighborhood association.  Not surprisingly, their websites always look a bit more current than hers…

As for free time:  when not rumbling around the Madison/Milwaukee/Chicago area with her family, or holed up in her studio scrambling for an exhibit deadline, Linda can usually be found 1) on a train, 2) in either DC or Boston, or 3) in Greece - enjoying art and architecture, good food, and visits with dear friends.

On the home front
: Linda's staunch supporters are her husband and son. She is shadowed by her ancient, hopelessly overweight, crazy calico cat, affectionately known as “the Furry Meatloaf.”
